Who Says Elephants Can’t Feel? An Introduction to NLP Logical Levels … (Part 1)
American scientists just found the first evidence that Elephants can recognize themselves in the mirror. For us humans, that doesn’t sound like a big deal, right?
But in the animal kingdom, that’s a very unique gift to have! Only humans, apes, dolphins and (now) elephants can look in the mirror and see themselves. All other animals think that there’s another animal beyond the glass and mistake it for another animal.
Why is it important to recognize oneself in the mirror?
In the words of a Forbes journalist …
Self-recognition in a mirror is believed to be related to empathic tendencies (being able to identify and understand others’ feelings) and the ability of an individual to distinguish oneself from others, a characteristic that evolved independently in several branches of animals, the scientists said.
The ability to self-recognize has a lot to do with the intelligence to introspect. Most other animals aern’t actually smart enough to even think about their identities. All they ever think about is their environment and their physical/emotional needs.
